About ABS

Many people wonder about the origin of this blog’s name. Why “Avian Bone Syndrome?” The answer is surprisingly simple: one of the lesser characters in a show I love claims to have such a disease, which prevents her from shaking hands or do anything that would require to use force, because her bones could break. I found the concept somewhat intriguing, and since I had originally planned to use this blog to rant to the world, it simply stuck. (You may also notice that the blog’s subtitle clearly references a handshake.)

While the situation in the show is humorous, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a real genetic bone disorder, that causes bone brittleness and can be very serious. If you came to this blog by looking for information about the disease and were offended by the light-hearted use of one of its popular names, I sincerely apologize. When I registered the domain name, I wasn’t even aware that OI was a real disorder.

Oh, and in case someone is wondering: the show is Tina Fey’s “30 Rock,” and the character with avian bone syndrome is Phoebe.
